The coaching playbook is effective’s A-Z of bite-sized tools, tips and techniques for coaches, managers – and even for your own personal development.

This is a key acronym from Nudge Theory, which is becoming a popular approach to influencing people’s behaviour through psychology rather than rules and regulations. EAST stands for:

  • Easy
  • Attractive
  • Socially acceptable
  • Timely

So the principle is – the easier, more attractive, more socially acceptable and timely something is, the more likely it is to be done. And importantly, the reverse is also true. The more difficult, less attractive, less socially acceptable and timely something is, the less likely it is to be done. So EAST may explain both why something positive is done – and why something negative may also be done.

So to give the four relevant ‘positions’:

  • a positive behaviour may be supported by EAST: such as my fruit preference for grapes: they are easy and convenient to purchase and eat, attractively sweet, socially acceptable, and timely (ie quick)
  • a negative behaviour can also be EAST: such as junk food (a Mackie D): easy, attractive (flavour, convenience and cost); socially acceptable – loads of peers will eat the same; and timely (- ie quick)
  • a negative behaviour that is the opposite of EAST: such as speeding outside a school: – humps in the road make it difficult; it is not attractive or socially acceptable to speed in that situation; and is timeliness is irrelevant – the bumps are permanent
  • a positive behaviour that is the opposite of EAST: such as dieting. For many the option seems difficult (measuring out quantities of food and being careful about what you buy); unattractive – boring and tasteless food; socially unacceptable – being a party pooper (and maybe seen as holier than thou) by drinking less or not at all, and declining ‘good’ food; and not good timing, if everyone has gone out for a meal – for a good time – and you aren’t playing ball.

Coach message:

this may be a useful structure to understand how a client can either make a behaviour change more – or less – likely. It may help the client both understand what makes them behave like they do (either for or against a particular behaviour); and what needs to happen to make a different behaviour or course of action happen.
