Behavioural Science
('Nudge Theory')
Training Courses

Our behavioural science courses will teach you how to influence and change behaviour without instruction or incentives.

Do you need to get people to do what you want them to do, or stop doing what they're doing? This is the essence of Nudge Theory - influencing people in small, unnoticeable ways, based on understanding human behaviour and psychology - and the power of habits.

Behavioural Science Course Content

What is behavioural science?

The origin of behavioural science (commonly called 'Nudge Theory'), including ground-breaking research which revealed its potential, and the 2 key principles underpinning it.

How Nudge Theory works

The 4 elements of the acronym EAST, which make a particular behaviour more likely; its opposite DUSI, which make behaviour more difficult; and examples of both in action

How to use Nudge Theory for change management

An overview of the 9 key strategies underpinning Nudge Theory: messenger, incentive, norms, default, salience, affect, commitment & ego.

Perception

A look at why different perspectives occur and the impact this has on the way we think and act… plus how to minimise any difficulties this difference may cause.

Marginal gains

Little things make a big difference... and they really can make or break success. Proven time and again by the best of the best... now it's your turn!

We are always happy to adapt both learning content and delivery style to match your specific needs, so treat this page as a starting point, and we'll adapt it to be just right.

Never 'death by powerpoint'

We always provide a variety of learning approaches in each of our workshops.

Each workshop typically includes learning input from the trainer, supported by a range of mixed media, interactive elements, discussion and group work. Most workshops also include case work and practical skill-development activities to apply the learning, with more time dedicated to this in the longer courses.

'Want more?' resource pack

In addition to providing a copy of any slide deck, we always provide a ‘want more’ section, of curated resources including book summaries, podcasts, downloads and articles.

Behavioural Science Course Frequently Asked Quesitons

Isn't a lot of Nudge Theory common sense?

Perhaps, in some cases, but that doesn't mean it's common practice! And what's obvious to one person may not be obvious to someone else...

Isn't Nudge Theory manipulative?

Good question. But as Newton said, every action has a reaction. So all action influences in some way or other, to some degree or other - so the issue is, do we want to use that influence constructively or not? And ultimately it's a matter of judgement as to if, how and when to use such influence.

Doesn't it all sound easier than it is?

Two points: the effect may look and be easy, but a lot of work may have gone into making it that easy; and secondly, research shows convincingly that the easier something is, the more likely someone is to do it...

Which of the courses should I take?

The short, 90-minute course will give you a sound overview and introduction to Nudge Theory, but it is the half-day programme that fully develops the 9 core elements. And on the full day workshop, the afternoon is given over to participants working on applying what they have learned to their own organisation's processes and ways of communicating.
