Management Styles
Training Courses

If you're a manager - what style do you typically use, and why? And do you consciously change it, depending...on what? Is it the best management style for that situation?

Yet again, one size does not fit all. Different situations - including different people - may benefit from different ways of managing them. These management training courses will provide a clear overview of each style; pros, cons and most importantly, when to use - and not use - that style.

Management Styles Workshop Content

A 6 styles overview

There are 6 classic styles that managers (and leaders) can use. So what are they; which should you use and when; and can you use them all? A self-assessment questionnaire might help you find out your starting point...

Style 1: command and control...

We all know this style, and may have experienced it...but has it passed its sell-by date? Or are there times when it is still the most appropriate style? And if it is, can you deliver it, convincingly?

Style 2: making the sale...

Sometimes you may need to persuade, and get buy in to a particular idea (not necessarily your own...). Are you confident and capable of doing this effectively, should the situation require it?

Style 3: negotiation...

We've all heard the term, but do we know what it takes to be an effective negotiator? Can you recognise when a conversation might drift into a negotiation, or when to seek a negotiated outcome? And do you have the skills, imagination, flexibility and sufficient bargaining techniques to be successful?

Style 4: collaboration...

Many of us favour collaboration as a preferred style of working...but it is always the best? And what do you do next if collaboration isn't working?

Style 5: coaching...

What does it take to be a good coach, and what are the circumstances where coaching would be the best management style to take?

Style 6: facilitation...

When would it be a good idea for a manager to facilitate a particular situation? And what skills and techniques would a good facilitator need?

Who is management styles training for?

Our management styles training courses are ideal for those who want to identify the range of management styles typical in their role; assess their own ability to deliver each of these styles; and consider how effective each style might be to be successful in their role. The training courses are particularly important for anyone who wants to:

 - learning outcome Increase their knowledge of the 6 styles, the situations that are most appropriate for each, and have the opportunity to assess themselves against each style.
 - learning outcome Decide, if there is a gap between current competence and any of the 6 styles, how best to close that gap.
 - learning outcome Be more conscious of any circumstance facing them, and deliberately and confidently choose the best management style for any situation.
 - learning outcome Check if they have an automatic 'default' style, and if they do, why, and what they can do to remove it as a default.

Management Styles Workshop Activities

The starting point is an overview of the 6 styles, which is provided on the shortest course (90 minutes). During the half day course each of the 6 styles will be covered in more detail, outlining the situations that are most usefully managed by each of the styles, and covering the key skills required to deliver each style effectively. On the full day course, participants take part in a number of scenarios in which they have to choose, then use, a particular style (or combination of styles).

Never 'death by powerpoint'

We always provide a variety of learning approaches in each of our workshops.

Each workshop typically includes learning input from the trainer, supported by a range of mixed media, interactive elements, discussion and group work. Most workshops also include case work and practical skill-development activities to apply the learning, with more time dedicated to this in the longer courses.

'Want more?' resource pack

In addition to providing a copy of any slide deck, we always provide a ‘want more’ section, of curated resources including book summaries, podcasts, downloads and articles.

My attention can easily wander, but this was never the case here, largely due to the variety of learning approaches used. Never a dull moment!

What are the benefits of management styles training?

Full knowledge of all 6 styles
Ability to match style to situation
More confidence in managing any situation
Increased staff confidence in you as a manager

Management Style Frequently Asked Quesitons

Is any one management style better than the rest?

No - it's all about tailoring your style to provide the best management style fit for any situation.

How do you decide what is the best management style?

Technically it's a matter of assessing the actual or potential situation, and choosing the most appropriate style. But there is often a hidden psychological factor: sometimes a style is chosen, not because it is the best fit for the situation, but for the individual: they are either more comfortable with a particular style, or equally uncomfortable with a style that otherwise would be the best 'technical' fit.

What if I'm stuck, and always choose the same style?

Bluntly, you may not be an effective manager - unless of course, coincidentally you have a situation that is unchanging, and only requires the same style. But otherwise, not only will you be less effective, but that will be noticed by your staff, and your manager.

Which of these three management stylestraining courses is the best starting point?

The three courses build on each other; the shortest provides a thorough overview, and the half day provides a deeper dive into each of the 6 styles. If you want the opportunity to practice and test the 6 styles, the afternoon of the full day course provides exactly that.
